Hiking Mount Washburn
Mount Washburn is one of the most popular trails in Yellowstone National Park, and it's easy to see why. The trail features spectacular views, beautiful wildflowers, and plenty of wildlife, including bighorn sheep and bears.
There is access to Mount Washburn from the north or south; the northern trail (Chittenden Road) is shorter and steeper (5.4 miles round trip), while the southern Dunraven Pass route (6.4 miles) is more winding, with switchbacks up the hillside through diverse terrains. This hike is moderate with an elevation gain of 1,400 feet. The summit (10,234 feet) offers a must-see 360-degree panoramic view from the Tetons to the Yellowstone's Grand Canyon!
I recommend taking the southern route, which starts at the Dunraven Pass Trailhead. The Chittenden trail is not as scenic and more a service road that you follow. If you are lucky, you may even get to see bighorn sheep who call this area their home. You may see them walking on the trail itself! As you get closer to the summit, be prepared for it to become extremely windy.
If you are lucky, you can see Bighorn Sheep lounging on the mountain as you take this hike!
In addition to being a fantastic hike, the summit is home to a fire lookout station. The views can be seen here on the webcam from the station. Inside the base, check out the interpretative exhibits, bathrooms, trash cans, viewing platforms, and maps.
