    Kismet

Destiny is all I can say about this opportunity I had in New York! How lucky was I that an exhibition with original materials from J.K. Rowling's personal archives would begin the week I happened to be visiting with a friend in New York! I couldn't believe my luck!

    It Takes Planning and Research

Being the planner I am, I am always researching new and fun things to do when traveling. I was surfing for information on things to do in Manhattan and came upon this gem of an exhibition. The New York Historical Society, located across Central Park, presented the British Library's Harry Potter: A History of Magic with never before seen artwork, rare books, manuscripts, and J.K. Rowling's personal items.

The rare books include information in which J.K. Rowling researched some of the lore, botany, and inspiration for the Harry Potter series. J.K. Rowling's very own handwritten outline for all the books on lined notebook paper was on display! Just imagine, this notebook paper lists the magical world's trajectory that we have come to know and love very much.

Also, on display are the authors' own pen drawings of the characters in the series. Artwork by Mary Grandpre, which we've come to love in the series's U.S. printings, is vastly different from those of the author. It was exciting to get a glimpse of insight into how J. K. Rowling envisioned these characters to look like. There was no photography allowed within the exhibition. It would have been lovely to include a few photos to show you what was on display. The items and materials on display show the depth of the author's research and imagination in creating the world of Harry Potter. .

    My Wish

I genuinely hope that this exhibition makes its way back to the states so more fans can get a glimpse of the backstory from the author's perspective. I will not miss this exhibition if it comes around to my neck of the woods.

    Location Location, Location

I can’t say it enough, location is so important while traveling. Especially in a city so vibrant as New York. To cut down on travel time and ease of using public transportation, I recommend taking a look at subway stops and main things you wish to see to maximize your enjoyment while vacationing.
